How’s this for a balcony view? We rented a two-bedroom condo right on Avenguda de Gabriel Roca, the main drag in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. As you can see, we had a view of the cathedral, in the back left of this image; we could also see the cruise ships off to the right of the balcony.

If you’re looking for parties and all night dancing, this is the place to be. We found, more than once during our week here, that we’d be popping down to Crepes Suzette’s for morning coffee at the same time clubbers were making their way back to their hotels or to drop on the sand. If you’ve passed that stage (or never entered it), this makes for a handy, albeit noisy, home base from which to explore everything Mallorca has to offer.

Just a five-minute walk to a grocery store, we had the best of both worlds.

We were able to stock up on supplies for a number of meals, but also had the advantage of dozens of restaurants in walking distance.

The good news is that, in addition to all the additional visitors disembarking from cruise ships for pearl shopping and more, you can find moments of solitude, quiet and beauty in Palma.

Passeig del Born is home to gorgeous architecture, upscale shops and a number of cafes and restaurants, where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the boulevard.

Despite the heat of the day, these little ones had no time to sit still. Under the watchful eyes of their parents, who were enjoying afternoon sips in the shade, the fellows were fresh and raring to go.

While you’re strolling through Passeig del Born, any gelato lover will want to stop at Givoanni L. You’ll have plenty of flavours from which to choose, and you can sample a flavour or two to ensure you’re happy with your choice. We saw more than one Giovanni L shop, and it’s no wonder they’re popular. The genuinely friendly smiles and service at this location are as much of a draw as the delicious gelato.

If you visit the the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma (La Seu), you’re in for a number of visual treats. The Gothic cathedral site is home to swans, street artists of all types, and great views over the water.

You’ll also find moments of utter tranquility and sweetness.

As any parent knows, it’s not just boys who like to run around and have fun. Why stand still when there’s so much to see and do?

Palma is home to well known pastry treats; bakers are justifiably proud of their cremadillos de crema (left), and their ensaïmada.

Make your way through the streets of the old town …

… and you’ll find La Pajarita, a bombonería and a charcutería that has served Palma since 1872.

We found all these spots within walking distance of our condo, and were also able to make our way to a strip of sandy beach by foot.

Enroute, of course, you’ll pass more than a couple tempting watering holes perched on the Bay of Palma.

… and, if you’re lucky enough to be in Palma during a super moon, you may enjoy sights such as this when you settle back “home” for the evening.
