An Incredible Start

How’s this for the morning view off your balcony?

We’ve made our way to Oregon where, after a couple of days in Portland, we’re enjoying an oceanfront stay  at Cannon Beach while others watch over the home front. This beach is famous for its 237-foot high Haystack Rock and other outcrop, and last night’s sunset was more than impressive, but I’ll start here with the sites that met my eyes this morning.

Dragon

… Dragonflies, that is. Down at one of my favourite spots yesterday, they were flitting across the waters, where the ducks formed their own mini flotilla – except for the one, below,  who made a splash landing. Bees were busy gathering nectar, and the berries were ripening on the brambles. This is Vancouver.

Wildfire Skies Redux

You may have noticed that I snapped more than a few images of Vancouver’s Spanish Banks and the unusual lighting Thursday evening. Here’s a gallery of some more shots from that night.

Down by the Water

Down by the water Thursday evening, these boaters and the birds in their wake enjoyed relative solitude in an environment both muted and magnificent.

Passing in the Night

Spanish Banks 5296 Copyright Shelagh DonnellyWell, it wasn’t exactly two ships passing in the night, but the formation of the Canada Geese through the haze the other evening did, to these eyes, somewhat mirror the ship resting in Vancouver’s waters. The lighting and muted surroundings reflect the impact of provincial wildfires on our city.

Here are some more images from Thursday evening, when the purplish haze surrounding Vancouver’s North Shore mountains was dominated by golden cuts through the water.

As mentioned the other day, wildfires in BC have made for some dramatic skies – and waters. Above, an evening swimmer glides through the golden waters of Spanish Banks – and, below, we have silhouettes of a canine swimmer and his or her person at different points in the evening. In the first shot below, there’s a sense of the pooch pressing through molten lava.

Wildfire Sunset

In British Columbia, summer wildfires are no longer anomalies. We were among those evacuated from our home during the 2003 Okanagan Mountain Park Fire, but were among the fortunate whose homes were not lost.

As of earlier this week, a total of 184 wildfires were burning across beautiful BC, resulting in a number of evacuations, significant reductions in air quality, and worse. Wildfires are also a concern two provinces to the east of us, where roughly 13,000 people from northern areas of Saskatchewan have been evacuated from their homes.

In the midst of all this, Vancouverites continue to make our way to various beaches, where there is great beauty through the haze. These are some shots from last evening at Spanish Banks.

Oh, Canada! Join in the Celebration

In celebration of Canada Day, here’s some of my photography to give you a glimpse of our country and its inhabitants.

If you also follow me on Exceptional EA, you’ll find an almost entirely different series of Canadian images there today, as well.
