Gentle Skies

At day’s end in Sechelt, on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, I took this image with admiration for the incredible colours of these soothing, shifting skies.

Sun Kissed

At least a hundred feet below these dancing leaves, I stood on the shaded trail breathing in and admiring the old growth forest, and how the sun found a way to stroke these leaves which, reaching for Sol, appeared to dance a ring ’round their tree.

Truly Grand

… is this canyon, even if you arrive – as did we – barely moments before a serious downpour of rain. The stark tree, which appears petrified but was simply bare at this point in the season, adds an ominous sense of drama to this outlook over the Grand Canyon.

Closing Time

… at Kits Pool, once all the swimmers have shaken the water from their respective ears, towelled off and headed home for the evening.

The pool will close for the season this weekend, sending the regulars back to the Aquatic Centre or other locales, and then the seagulls will once again take over these waters for the Fall and Winter months.

Hope

Hope is a small town through which many British Columbians have driven, travelling to or from what we call the Lower Mainland to other parts of the province. Minivans, SUVs and carloads of families count on Hope as a pit stop where they can fill up their tanks with gas that’s not taxed as it is in the big city. For those who want to incorporate a scenic picnic break into their travel, there are some lovely little spots such as this, where people can stretch and enjoy their surrounds.

Engaged

This is for all the romantics out there. At the beach last night, this young couple was celebrating their engagement with a photographer who had them posing in the water with the glow of a gorgeous sunset highlighting their happiness and the sense of occasion. We walked by near what seemed to be the end of the shoot, in time to see the splash below –  the photographer’s idea for a bit of fun, with no more than a bit of spray reaching the bride-to-be.

Super Moon Over Palma

With the moon and our planet being generally 328,900 kilometers or 283,000 miles apart, we tend to get excited when it feels so close we might touch it. While apogee is the term used for that period in a given month when the moon is at its furthest from the earth, we describe the period when it’s closest to the earth as the perigee, or super moon. The distance between our two orbs also varies by month, and August 10th marked our closest dance this year (watch for the next one on September 27th next year).

This image comes from slightly earlier this summer, as we approached mid July in Palma de Mallorca. This harbour is home to a broad range of boats, from the modest to the ostentatious – with cruise ships also a regular appearance. Here, we have a quiet moment in this working area of the harbour, and a truly lovely moon, whatever its distance at this moment in time.

Wild Thing

Don’t let the beauty here fool you; this one was alert to the slightest sound in the early morning light.

Am posting this black and white beauty with a nod of appreciation to Melbourne-based Leanne Cole. Leanne hones her art and shares ideas and expertise on her Leanne Cole Photography site as well as on Flickr. She regularly provides other photographers with exposure to her wide audience, and Leanne’s weekly series known as Monochrome Madness provided inspiration for today’s image.

Living the Good Life

This is where some of us go after work in Vancouver. Even though I wrote the other day that summer is winding down on the west coast, we’ve rebounded from a few soggy days and are again enjoying gorgeous sunshine.

Here are some shots, all taken the same evening on our post-dinner stroll down to Kits Beach, including one  of the typical clusters of people enjoying the ending to  yet another perfect evening at the beach.
